Anna rascala ! Mind it!
hey folks,
Finally m
feeling so coconutty fresh. Seriously, there are so many coconut trees around
me but still it is so damn costly. You will get a coconut for INR 25/-. I mean
what is that. When i was leaving for Chennai my friends and family teased me
that "wahan toh beta 5Rs me nariyal milta hai, khub peena ab"... and
look what i found here. Well this was not my only disappointments in Chennai
(to be precise: I got robbed too). A lot of people who move from north-India(shh
people don't like them much here) find Chennai being coined as a metro city
pretty disappointing. I am not being racist here. Its just that it is still
under the alloying stage. Many metals need to be melted and need a hot hammer
too.
But once you
start accepting your surroundings you do start getting a hang of this place.
Lets see:
1)Water water:
you visit Marina and say" oh my god, so tacky, so dirty, so conjusted, Why
on earth is it this famous", then you visit the besantnagar beach and you
say" this is still far better, i can come here every week, it is cool,
good people, and nice area too"...finally you visit the ECR road virgin
beaches and u gasp" this is what i was looking for, Chennai is such a
beautiful city, i wonder why people say u would not like to visit Chennai
beaches." Now you see the Dramatic change in yourself.
2)Ipdi Irkinga:
Nalla is now what i reply to almost everything. Its either nalla or illiea...
apart from the broken English that most people understand (benefit: you can use
Hindi as your secret language here), although Tamil as a language might feel
another disappointment here, but you do learn a few words and successfully
communicate.
and that one
word you learn and successfully use gives you a joy making you feel that you
have become a space scientist.
3)Dosai and
vadai: till now you might have been to sankalp and had there unending varieties
of Dosai (that's what its known as here). But you land in Chennai and its
another let down, All you get is rava, plain, masala.
and then you
think why is this called South India. But apart from Dosa, go for a proper
Tamil meal and i bet you wont be able to finish half of eat. Not because its
bad, but because it is so filling and it is yummy too. you get a whole range of
idli, vada, dosa, rice, rasam, sambhar, chutneys, kurma, pongals and what not,
that too all served on a single banana leaf (there's a proper way to fold it
after using and wash it before using, kindly take a note else you will have 10
eyes staring you)
The bottom line is
Chennai is like Sine Curve: many times you are at the bottom of the curve
feeling why are you stuck between these people, communicate on sign language,
searching for similar faces here, but you always have enough experiences
which push you to the top of curve and feel like a queen there.
Chennai is like that only........initially u r nervous....then u despise it........then u lyk it........finally when u move on, u miss it.....
ReplyDeleteNice article about your experience in Chennai.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I dislike is the 'anna rascala' part. It is a nonsensical phrase - I'm sure you would have never heard it in Chennai. It seems like it is an invented derogatory phrase making fun of the way south Indians speak their language - which is not really funny if you think about it. Each language is unique.
Good luck to you!
PS: sorry you were robbed. I am Tamil, but from another city in Tamilnadu - and my watch was stolen in Chennai as well. My home in Bangalore was burgled as well - I suppose one needs to be careful no matter where they are.
